Situated at the estuary where Skudai River and Danga River meets the open sea at Straits of Johor, is Kampung Bakar Batu. There was once lush mangrove forest, rich with natural resources; fishes, crabs, prawns and etc were the natural resources which sustain the living of a unique ancient aborigine Austronesia proto-malay race called ORANG SELETAR.
Orang Seletar calls themselves Orang Asli Laut, not kuala , bukit (hill) or hutan (forest). They are the ORANG ASLI SUKU LAUT / Sea people which has genetic links to the Orang Suku Laut of Riau ( Indonesia), Mokens of Phuket (Thailand) and Orang Bajau of Sabah & Philipines. There’s popular believes that all ORANG LAUT / sea people originated from Riau, Indonesia, and have been positioned to various places along the `Spice Trade Route ‘ to guard the sea route against pirates attacks alike to the NAVY today. Orang Seletar were positioned at Seletar, Temasek ( now, Singapore), guarding the coast all along Straits of Johore for centuries. They later call themselves `Orang Seletar’ due to their base in Temasek, where their village was.
