New semester, new pledge, new resolution. The Workbase Selection is now open for all students registered for Design Subjects this semester. However, there have been some changes in the Workbase system, particularly in the lower years. The Workbases now follow centralized coordination and no longer have a separate project brief as it was before.

This system is hoped to reintroduce the students to the core of architectural design during the lower years and only introduce them to specializations in the upper years (particularly at the Thesis level). Hence the selection criteria for this semester boils down to which workbase master the students prefer to work with.

Menurut Timbalan Presiden Pertubuhan Arkitek Malaysia, Ar.

Turut hadir, Dekan Fakulti Alam Bina UTM, Prof. Madya Dr. Ahmad Nazri Muhamad Ludin.

Beautification drive: Mohd Jaafar launching ‘From
Abandoned to Abundance’ seminar in Johor Bahru
Tuesday while Prof Dr Mohd Hamdan (left) looks on.

JOHOR BARU: The local council here hopes to rid the city of abandoned buildings by offering incentives to developers interested in reviving these projects.

Among the incentives are a 50% discount in fees for building plan submission, 50% on improvement service fund and 50% on building charges and waiver of deposits.

Johor Baru City Council (MBJB) mayor Mohd Jaafar Awang said the incentives were meant to reduce the many “eyesores” in the city.

“I hope these incentives will lead to developers restoring abandoned buildings,” he said after launching the “From Abandoned to Abundance” seminar about reviving abandoned commercial premises here yesterday.

Introduction

You cannot miss them – those monoliths that remained abandoned for years on end. They blight our urban landscape. They are grave cause for concern , a festering wound- to those who have invested in them, to neighbouring property owners and to every caring member of our urban community. They undermine would be investors confidence in the Region’s ability to sustain our economic promise.

No concerted effort appear to have been taken to address the situation. We have invited a number of speakers ranging from those who have first-hand experience in investing, dealing and in administering such buildings, property professionals who have advised clients in managing property assets in project and construction management and in marketing such properties. We have invited a well known speaker to discuss the adequacy of our existing laws and their implementation to deal with the situation.

Participation will have a chance to express their views besides listening to the speakers in an open discussion session.

The rapid economic growth in Malaysia since its independence more than 50 years ago have driven the change of the skyline of her main cities. Land is the most sought after commodity in the city scape; its high value forces developers to maximize the efficiency of the building in order to gain maximum profit.
However, there is a need to address the growth of highrises particularly in relation to the environment. As the world’s resources becoming more and more scarce and demands continue to rise, there is a need for buildings, be it big or small, to be green and sustainable. The dialogue is hoped to intrigue the intellectual minds in building for a better future in Malaysia.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND THIS SEMINAR

This seminar is targeted for those involved in the contemporary highrise industry in Malaysia: from practicing architects and engineers to law-makers, future industry leaders as well as the end users themselves.

INTRODUCTION

‘DESIGN Thesis’ is a final major design exercise in the formal education of a student architect to test his/her accumulated knowledge and skills in handling architectural problems. It provides a unique opportunity for students to pursue their own interests in architecture and the built environment through the medium of a building or a complex of buildings of their own choice from preparation or investigation of brief to design proposal, and accompanied by a full documentation of investigations, findings, alternative decisions and conclusions. A thesis should also be able to provide excitement and exploratory opportunities for the student; allowing for challenging solutions, element of surprise and the crossing of threshold in architectural ideas.

DESIGN THESIS PROPOSAL

Students are required to submit their proposal in the form of Statement of Intent. This will be then be subject to approval by the Coordinators and the respective panels before embarking on the studies.

Situated at the estuary where Skudai River and Danga River meets the open sea at Straits of Johor, is Kampung Bakar Batu. There was once lush mangrove forest, rich with natural resources; fishes, crabs, prawns and etc were the natural resources which sustain the living of a unique ancient aborigine Austronesia proto-malay race called ORANG SELETAR.

Orang Seletar calls themselves Orang Asli Laut, not kuala , bukit (hill) or hutan (forest). They are the ORANG ASLI SUKU LAUT / Sea people which has genetic links to the Orang Suku Laut of Riau ( Indonesia), Mokens of Phuket (Thailand) and Orang Bajau of Sabah & Philipines. There’s popular believes that all ORANG LAUT / sea people originated from Riau, Indonesia, and have been positioned to various places along the `Spice Trade Route ‘ to guard the sea route against pirates attacks alike to the NAVY today. Orang Seletar were positioned at Seletar, Temasek ( now, Singapore), guarding the coast all along Straits of Johore for centuries. They later call themselves `Orang Seletar’ due to their base in Temasek, where their village was.

Yes, you read that right! OpenOffice is an open source alternative to Microsoft Office, delivered to you with free open license. I’ve started using it for a couple of days, and from what I can see, it can do exactly the entire Microsoft Office Suite can. Of course, certain features are propriety to Microsoft, but being open source, it means third party could create application or add new features that could simply be integrated into you application.

The application suite includes:

  1. Writer – equivalent to Word. Could use any Word document files, template and so on.
  2. Calc – equivalent to Excel.
  3. Draw – almost comparable to CorelDraw or any graphics editing software. Basically a doped up version of Microsoft Paint.
  4. Impress – equivalent to Powerpoint.
  5. Base – a database processing/management application (which I doubt we’d ever use).

I’ve started using it, and it seems a great alternative to Microsoft Office. It has garnered support from the open community, and have been commended in several computer magazines. Consider me converted!

Now, I know students don’t usually have much money to spend on software (ahem!), especially in these dark days. At the same time, as an academic community, we preach originality and respect over copyright ownership. Now we have a great alternative to Microsoft Office at no cost at all! I urge students to try this application and report back to me. If successful, I would recommend the department to move towards this application right away.

We already utilized free Google Sketchup. Now free OpenOffice. If only the Draw application could rival CorelDraw or Adobe Illustrator, all we need to buy is Microsoft Windows.

Download and install it now. Only 142MB.
