Menurut Timbalan Presiden Pertubuhan Arkitek Malaysia, Ar.
Turut hadir, Dekan Fakulti Alam Bina UTM, Prof. Madya Dr. Ahmad Nazri Muhamad Ludin.
Beautification drive: Mohd Jaafar launching ‘From
Abandoned to Abundance’ seminar in Johor Bahru

JOHOR BARU: The local council here hopes to rid the city of abandoned buildings by offering incentives to developers interested in reviving these projects.
Among the incentives are a 50% discount in fees for building plan submission, 50% on improvement service fund and 50% on building charges and waiver of deposits.
Johor Baru City Council (MBJB) mayor Mohd Jaafar Awang said the incentives were meant to reduce the many “eyesores” in the city.
“I hope these incentives will lead to developers restoring abandoned buildings,” he said after launching the “From Abandoned to Abundance” seminar about reviving abandoned commercial premises here yesterday.
Introduction
You cannot miss them – those monoliths that remained abandoned for years on end. They blight our urban landscape. They are grave cause for concern , a festering wound- to those who have invested in them, to neighbouring property owners and to every caring member of our urban community. They undermine would be investors confidence in the Region’s ability to sustain our economic promise.
No concerted effort appear to have been taken to address the situation. We have invited a number of speakers ranging from those who have first-hand experience in investing, dealing and in administering such buildings, property professionals who have advised clients in managing property assets in project and construction management and in marketing such properties. We have invited a well known speaker to discuss the adequacy of our existing laws and their implementation to deal with the situation.
Participation will have a chance to express their views besides listening to the speakers in an open discussion session.
The rapid economic growth in Malaysia since its independence more than 50 years ago have driven the change of the skyline of her main cities. Land is the most sought after commodity in the city scape; its high value forces developers to maximize the efficiency of the building in order to gain maximum profit.
However, there is a need to address the growth of highrises particularly in relation to the environment. As the world’s resources becoming more and more scarce and demands continue to rise, there is a need for buildings, be it big or small, to be green and sustainable. The dialogue is hoped to intrigue the intellectual minds in building for a better future in Malaysia.
WHO SHOULD ATTEND THIS SEMINAR
This seminar is targeted for those involved in the contemporary highrise industry in Malaysia: from practicing architects and engineers to law-makers, future industry leaders as well as the end users themselves.

Yes, it’s finally ours. After UKM’s Archustic a week ago, the 23rd Architectural Workshop in 2011 will be hosted by UTM Skudai in collaboration with UTM KL. Venue will likely be in Skudai as UTM KL will still be undergoing construction works by June next year. Theme is still open for suggestions.
There are 27 architectural schools in Malaysia to date, and we plan to invite them all. Not only that, we’re thinking of inviting architectural schools from neighbouring countries as well, including Singapore, Thailand, Indonesia and Brunei.
Updates will be coming soon!
